Why Young Living?
For those of you who have dipped your toes in the essential oil world, you've probably heard of a couple of different brands of oils or perhaps you've tried them for yourself and already have a few personal favorites! There seem to be some pretty strong brand loyalties when it comes to essential oils and I can definitely relate. I've used several different brands of oils in my years of diffusing in my home. But there's definitely a reason that I've chosen stand behind Young Living as opposed to some of the other brands that are commonly used.
Let's start from the beginning. I was first introduced to essential oils via a friend from church who was a representative for Doterra. She had one of those "parties" or "classes" at her house where she basically explained what essential oils are and how to use some of the most common ones. This was all completely new to me. I got to smell a whole bunch of different oils and asked about a hundred questions that night. Signing up for an enrollment kit was definitely not something I was ready to do spontaneously, partly because spending more than $100 on one thing is something that I don't usually do, but I did decide to buy one particular blend that was formulated to support respiratory health. I bought it mostly for Zachary it was probably 3 months old at the time, because he always seems to have a stuffy nose from daycare. Maybe this would help clear some of that up!
Well one thing I learned, and probably a little too slowly, was that not all oils should be used on all people. There is a thing called essential oil safety that I was completely unaware of. No one told me that you weren't supposed to use undiluted oils topically. Especially on a tiny baby. Whoops. I didn't have a diffuser yet. I only bought that one oil just to kind of get my feet wet on the whole concept. And I didn't really think to ask about safety or about dilluting and I just didn't know that some of the oils in that blend were not recommended for babies so young. A few Google searches later, I learned a little bit more about basic essential oil use and bought a few more Doterra oils (gentler ones this time!) and a decently priced diffuser on Amazon. I decided that I was going to try to make essential oils work for different things in my family.
Fast forward a little while and I discovered a brand called Plant Therapy that had a line specifically labeled as Kids Safe. These oils were formulated by a world-renowned aromatherapist and were completely safe to use on children. This was a godsend! Plant Therapy really gives a lot of useful information on how to use oils properly and even has some pretty cool recipes on their blog for DIY type of projects using essential oils. I was pretty happy with my decision to be a Plant Therapy person for the rest of forever, but I'd had some fellow mom friends who were fiercely loyal to Young Living. Something in me always wondered why.
A friend of mine ran a promo one day where you pay $10 and she sends you 3 essential oil rollers in the mail and then you get access to a private group class that she was hosting online. I figured $10 for three rollers is cheaper than any rollers I'd buy for myself, regardless of the brand, and I'm a huge fan of surprises, so hey. Sign me up! She created three different blends using Young Living Essential Oils: One to promote sleep, one to promote wellness, and another one she called "Mama" which I basically I took to mean, "just make it to bedtime!"
This was probably the turning point for me. I took those rollers on multiple overnight trips, to a teaching convention, to my everyday classroom, and even on the weekends when I felt a little tickle in my throat or if I new I'd have some stressful moments. I remember thinking to myself, " this stuff really lasts a long time." I'd roll on a little oil in the morning and still get little wiffs of the scent during my lunch break, several hours later. It was something that I had never experienced before with any of the pre-made rollers I'd been buying from other brands. And it really got me thinking about the quality that was special to Young Living. It didn't hurt that Young Living also had its own Kidscense line, formulated for children just like the stuff I had been using with Plant Therapy!
After talking with some ladies at work about how I use essential oils, I realized that I really could help others begin their own journey with essential oils. I'd spent hours reading and researching, just for my own personal knowledge, and I figured it was time to take the plunge. I decided to split a premium starter package with a friend. I might as well try these Young Living oils for myself. And besides, Thieves smells divine! Once I saw the breakdown of all the things that come in a premium starter kit, I really was pleasantly surprised at how affordable it all really was! For $160, you get 11 oils, a gorgeous and high-quality diffuser, and a whole bunch of samples of other products. I've owned four diffusers since I first started using essential oils and I can say 100% that my young living diffuser is by far the best quality. It just feels sturdier than all the others that I've had before and diffuses so evenly. And who can beat how pretty it is?! I also compared the Young Living oils themselves to some of the Doterra and Plant Therapy counterparts that I already own, and the Young Living version just smells so much richer and more pure.
So, this is why I see the value in Young Living. The premium starter kit makes the price per item comparable to some of the less expensive essential oil brands, but the quality I see in Young Living is just so much higher. And while some use essential oils just as fragrance, I truly do use them for the wellness benefits and the emotional support. It's worth it for me to invest in the best quality product I can. And Young Living has so many more things to offer than just oils!
